Pinknoise – KontaktBanks: Librerie di sintetizzatori per Kontakt
In questi ultimi mesi si sta verificando una piccola “rivoluzione musical-tecnologica”: in pratica, sta cambiando la tendenza nell’utilizzare, per i propri lavori live o da studio, librerie pesantissime con sonorità a volte anche interessanti, ma che necessitano di tonnellate di RAM e CPU sempre più performanti. In questo numero abbiamo fatto un salto nel passato, provando per voi 4 librerie di synth che ripropongono anche dei modelli hardware molti datati, ma che hanno fatto e continueranno a fare la storia della musica.
Pinknoise, proveniente dal mercato dei refills per Reason e specializzata nel portare in nuovi formati le sonorità tipiche dei synths vintage, fornisce da qualche tempo librerie anche nell’altro celebre ed iper-gettonato formato, quello per Native Instruments Kontakt.
Con l’uscita della recente “Virology”, libreria ricca di suoni provenienti dal blasonato Access Indigo2/VirusC, sono quattro le proposte attualmente in catalogo. A Virology si aggiungono Deepflight (basata sul Roland D-50), Matrix (dal Matrix 1000) ed Evolver (dal DSI Evolver).
Struttura della libreria
Le patches per Kontakt sfruttano in maniera equilibrata e “fruibile” lo “scripting” di Kontakt, con una interfaccia molto chiara e che include le principali voci per applicare qualche “tweak” al volo, come il filtro (passa Basso o Alto), doppio ADSR per il suono e per il filtro, mandate di delay e riverbero, nonché arpeggiatore. Tutti i knobs sono ovviamente mappabili su controller con la funzione midi-learn di Kontakt. Le patches sono convenientemente suddivise in categorie come Bass, Leads, Pads, FX, Poly, Arp & Sequence e così via. Inoltre, il produttore ha creato una sezione sul sito “Control map presets” dove è possibile fare il download delle mappe midi dei seguenti controller AKAY MPK 49, Korg Kontrol 49 e tutta la serie Novation, in modo da utilizzare queste impostazioni per gestire, come si faceva un tempo, tutti i parametri del synth in tempo reale, senza usare lo scomodo e inutile mouse che permette di usare un parametro alla volta e non ha la precisione di un knob e di un slider fisico.
Come suona
Il suono, in tutte e quattro le librerie, è di ottima fattura: buona presenza timbrica e bilanciamento, agilmente inseribile nei mix, a dimostrazione di un campionamento acquisito con le giuste accortezze ed un “gear” adeguato. Va detto che le librerie non contengono suoni particolarmente elaborati ed evolutivi, in quanto il più delle volte si è preferito conservare l’aspetto originale dei suoni. Ad avviso di chi scrive, le 2 librerie più interessanti sono quelle del Matrix 1000, in quanto troviamo sonorità di pad meno abusate dei classici suoni Roland che imperversano in quasi tutte le produzioni musicali e difficilmente trovabili in altre collezioni di suoni molto più blasonate; invece, Evolver, dal suono molto inca…to, è decisamente più adatto per produzioni di musica elettronica.
Informazioni sulle librerie
Per ogni libreria l’autore ha predisposto una sezione Introduzione, dove c’è una piccola storia del synth, segnalando anche il genere di sonorità che riesce a riprodurre meglio e quale gruppo storico utilizzava questo strumento. Ho trovato molto interessante il rilascio all’utente della tabella di implementazione midi concepita come una guida di riferimento rapida, che consente di identificare tutti i controlli MIDI (CC) delle 4 librerie in Kontakt.
Inoltre il produttore ha creato una sezione sul sito dove l’utente può scaricare una versione demo per testare la qualità del prodotto.
La libreria si può acquistare solo via internet e, quindi, la otterremo tramite download.
Pro:
- Il prezzo è assolutamente nella media di altri prodotti simili.
- Bella la sezione Control map presets
Contro
- Sarebbe stata preferibile una sezione di programmazioni che riproducesse anche sonorità completamente diverse da quelle dell’hardware originale.

Over the past few months some sort of a little “music-technologic revolution” has been occurring: basically, the tendency of using heavy libraries, for live or studio sessions, though sometimes of very interesting sounds, but needing tons of RAM space and CPU more and more efficient, is changing. For this number we’ve been taking a leap back in time, putting to test for you 4 synth libraries which offer some very old hardware models, but have been making and will keep on doing the music history.
Pinknoise, coming from the refill market for Reason and specialized in turning the typical vintage synth sounds into new formats, has been producing, for quite some time now, also the other notorious and very sought-after library format, the one for Native Instruments Kontakt.
With the release of the recent “Virology” library, which is full of orginal sounds coming from the emblazoned Access Indigo2/VirusC, there are four choices on the catalogue. In addition to Virology, there are Deepflight (based on the Roland D-50), Matrix (based on Matrix 1000) an Evolver (based on DSI Evolver).
Library Structure
The patches for Kontakt utilize the Kontakt scripting in a balanced and usable way, within a very clear interface which includes the main functions to make some quick tweaks, as well as for the filter (high-pass or low-pass), double ADSR for the sound and for the filter, delay and reverb lashings, as well as arpeggiator. Of course all the knobs can be mapped within the controller through the Kontakt midi-learn function. Patches are properly divided in categories such Bass, Leads, Pads, FX, Poly, Arp & Sequence and so on. Moreover, its producer created a section at the “control map presets” site where it is possible to download some midi maps for the following controllers: AKAY MPK 49, Korg Kontrol 49 and all the Novation series, in order to take advantage of these settings to control, as it used to be some time ago, all the synth parameters in real time, with no need to use the mouse which only allows to use one parameter at a time and it doesn’t have a knob or a slider accuracy.
How it sounds
The sound, within each of the four libraries, is of very good fabric: good timbre presence, easy to import to the mix, which testify the accurate sample capture and an appropriate gear. It must be said that the libraries don’t offer particularly elaborate and evolutionary sounds, for most of the times the original aspect of the sounds has been maintained. According to who’s writing, the 2 most interesting libraries are the Matrix 1000 one, as we find less used pad sounds in comparison to the standard Roland ones which are very common in all the music productions and very hard to find in far more emblazoned collections; instead, Evolver, showing a very strong sound, is definitely more suitable for electronic music productions.
Informations about the libraries
The producer has been setting an Introduction section for each library, including a little story about the synth it refers, even pointing out the kind of sound it is able to provide best and which band in music history used to use that instrument. I find it very interesting letting the user take advantage of the midi table as quick guide reference, which helps to identify any MIDI controls (CC) within the 4 Kontakt libraries. In addition the producer has created a download section for a demo version from the site so to try the product quality. The library can only be purchased via internet therefore we’ll get it via download.
Pro:
• Its price is definitely on the average among other similar products.
• A nice Control map presets section
Cons:
• It would have been better if there was a loop section which could have produced complete different sounds than the original hardware’s.
