Il settore delle interfacce MIDI propone, ormai da tempo, soluzioni wireless per trasmettere dati di controllo ad uno o più moduli sonori. Tra le (pur poche) soluzioni in commercio, ci siamo soffermati sull’analisi di un sistema Mid Air di M- Audio, importato da Soundwave.
Il prodotto
Sotto i profili sia estetico che funzionale, l’apparecchio offre pochi spunti originali per poterne relazionare le peculiarità. Parliamo, infatti, di un doppio modulo, della grandezza di due cassette DV poste una sopra l’altra: il primo modulo è da collegare alla master mediante l’apposito cavo MIDI fornito in dotazione, il secondo – tramite USB, sempre in dotazione – al computer (Fig.1).
Fatto questo, restano da inserire le pile tipo Stilo AA all’interno del primo modulo (accetta anche le ricaricabili ed è meglio farlo prima di collegarlo alla master) ed attivare lo switch di accensione: non c’è bisogno, infatti, di driver, dato che MidAir è del tipo Class Compliant e viene pertanto riconosciuto automaticamente dai sistemi operativi MAC e PC. Il secondo modulo, poi, rileverà immediatamente la connessione wireless. A questo punto, il gioco è fatto. Una serie di led presenti su entrambi i moduli dirà in modo chiaro se le connessioni sono attive o meno.
Un piccolo appunto sull’inserimento delle pile. Il vano che le accetta riporta i poli +/- con un piccolo rilievo dello chassis stesso che non è immediatamente visibile. Ciò, potrebbe comportare l’inserimento errato delle stilo così com’è capitato al sottoscritto. Mi permetto di suggerire il corretto inserimento come mostrato in (Fig.1b).
Il funzionamento
Vizi e virtù di una interfaccia Midi “le scopriremo solo vivendo”: vediamo dunque le performance della nostra “cavia” nel contesto di uno spettacolo live e nella più classica delle attività di studio.
Nel primo caso, tramite una master a tracolla (Fig.2), notiamo che si ha la massima libertà di movimenti sul palco senza rischio di inciampare in cavi superflui. Sempre con la tastiera a tracolla ho sperimentato anche all’interno della mia abitazione la trasmissione wireless del sistema: ebbene, anche spostandomi di diverse stanze, chiudendo le varie porte intermedie e coprendo il modulo ricevente ai limiti dell’inverosimile, la trasmissione ha mostrato un incessante vigore, restituendo sempre un suono continuo e senza interruzioni.
Impietosamente, anche nel secondo “context”, abbiamo stressato la nostra interfaccia con diverse master, tra cui un Piano digitale GEM, la E-mu Xboard 25 e la M-Audio Radium 49. Nessun problema: la trasmissione della dinamica del pianoforte è più che ammirevole e lo stesso dicasi per tutti i controller MIDI (CC, PB, PC) trasmessi dal sistema. Né il setup Audio/MIDI di OSX (Fig.3), né tantomeno Logic Pro 9 hanno mai rilevato problemi nell’utilizzo.
Pro
Per chi cerca una soluzione wireless MIDI, la scelta offerta dal mercato non è grandiosa. Il sistema Mid Air, in questo contesto, tuttavia è sicuramente di rilevante interesse.
Contro
Ecco, il prezzo: certamente non è economico, né rapportabile ad un normale cavo MIDI da una decina di metri. Ma la possibilità di spostarvi in qualsivoglia zona del vostro studio o sul palco – senza dover pregare di non inciampare nei cavi – non ha prezzo. Se ne avete la possibilità provate il sistema: l’ago della bilancia magicamente penderà sui benefici pratici.
Extra
Il prodotto è vincolato ad un utilizzo univoco. L’ulteriore aspetto che mi viene da pensare come designatario di tale sistema potrebbe essere quello che un prodotto simile non riguarda solo i tastieristi, ma potrebbe fare la gioia anche di altri musicisti (i chitarristi, innanzitutto) che vogliono conciliare un sistema di conversione audio-MIDI con la libertà di movimento tipica delle performances acustiche.
The MIDI interfaces offers, for some time, wireless solutions for transmitting control data to one or more sound modules. Among the (albeit few) solutions on the market, we have focused on the analysis of a system of M-Audio Mid Air, imported from Soundwave.

In relation to their aesthetic and functional, the unit offers a few original ideas to be able to relate their differences. It speaks of a double form, the size of two DV tapes placed one above the other: the first module is connected to the master via the MIDI cable is supplied, the second – USB, always delivered – the computer (Fig.1).
Without this, remains to insert batteries type AA in the first module (also accepts rechargeable and is best done before connecting to the master) and activate the power switch: no need, in fact, drivers, since it is the type MidAir Class Compliant and is therefore automatically recognized by MAC OS and PC. The second module, then, will automatically detect the wireless connection. At this point, you’re done. A series of LEDs on both modules will say clearly whether the connections are active or not.
A brief note on the inclusion of the batteries. The compartment that accepts returns the + / – with a small relief of the same chassis that is not immediately visible. This may result in the incorrect insertion of the stylus as it happened to me. I suggest the correct position as shown in (Fig.1b).

Vices and virtues of a MIDI interface “to discover only by living” So we see the performance “guinea pig” of our in the context of a live show and in the classic study activities.
In the first case, by a master strap (Fig.2), we note that we have the maximum freedom of movement on stage without risk of tripping over cables unnecessary. Still using the portable keyboard I have also experienced within my home wireless transmission system: well, even moving to different rooms and close the various doors and covering the intermediate receiver module to the limits of the improbable, the broadcast showed a constant force, always returning sound continuously and without interruption.
Mercilessly, even in the second “context”, we have stressed our interface with various masters, including a digital piano GEM, E-mu Xboard 25 and M-Audio Radium 49. No problem: the transmission dynamics of the piano is more than admirable, and the same applies to any MIDI controller (CC, PB, PC) transmitted by the system. Neither the setup Audio / MIDI OSX (Fig.2), nor Logic Pro 9 have never encountered problems with.
Pro
For visitors looking for a wireless MIDI, the choice offered by the market is not great. The Mid Air system, in this context, however, is certainly of great interest.
Contro
Here, the price: it is certainly not cheap, nor should a normal MIDI cable from ten yards. But the opportunity to travel in any area of your studio or on stage – not to pray without tripping over wires – is priceless. If you can try the system: the balance magically hang on practical benefits.
Extra
The product is tied to a unique use. A further aspect that makes me think of that as designating a system could be a similar product that not only the keyboard, but it could make the joy of other musicians (guitarists, first of all) who want to combine a sound conversion -MIDI with the freedom of movement typical of performances noise.
