Non è facile parlare di PROG Metal. Chi lo ama non lo spiega, chi lo spiega lo sminuisce, chi lo suona lascia che sia l’ascoltatore a carpirne l’essenza, l’anima e la storia. Ed è proprio con l’approccio dell’ascoltatore che seguiremo a dedicarci ai DGM, una firma che in questa nicchia si è consolidata con un rilevante successo in quasi venti anni di carriera e con una squadra mutevole nel tempo.
Già dall’apertura, affidata a Hereafter, è possibile scorgere l’impronta di quest’album: energia e melodia sapientemente miscelati dal quintetto nazionale in un assetto ritmico spietato, che seguirà anche in diverse altre tracce. Enhancement e Not In Need scorrono che sono un piacere, con spazi più ampi a manovre melodiche tanto ardite quanto gradevoli, per lasciare poi il testimone a No Looking Back; già dalle primissime note, questo brano è in grado di catturare e trasportare in una tempesta di vibrazioni. Non è difficile immaginare, in un qualsiasi live, il coro del pubblico accompagnare Mark Basile durante il ritornello.
Trapped svolta: dura, a tratti cinematografica, degna di una colonna sonora per le scene limits di un film d’avventura o un poliziesco moderno. Le armonie messe a punto dalle sagge mani di Emanuele Casali introducono l’ascoltatore a quello che sarà un vero e proprio tripudio progressive che avrà il suo culmine in “…In a Movie”.
Away è il pezzone da headbanging: duro ed energico, con dei riff da impatto senza però trascurare la melodia, sommatoria di fattori dal risultato degno di ambientazione mitologica. Gli inserti elettronici (tra trance, IDM e breakbeat) che aprono Heartache potrebbero preoccupare i metallari più intransigenti, ma sarebbe una paura infondata: anche questo brano ha qualità da vendere e non delude affatto.
Rest in Peace e Brand New Blood, due power songs di stampo classico, accompagnano l’ascoltatore verso Fading & Falling ovvero la malinconica ballad di epilogo di quest’album caratterizzato da sonorità a dir poco adrenaliniche. E’ qui che i DGM dimostrano di essere abbastanza maturi da saper trasmettere emozioni anche senza dover ricorrere a velocità spinte e particolari virtuosismi. Poteva davvero finire qui? Come bonus track troviamo Rose in the Wind, sicuramente non eccessivamente brillante per innovazione, ma tuttavia abbastanza tosta da dimostrarci che questa band non mancherà di deliziarci per i prossimi anni a venire.
L’album, nel suo complesso, può definirsi ampiamente soddisfacente: l’esecuzione dei pezzi è suonata sempre in maniera impeccabile. Il suono di tutto il disco è molto compresso, si tende a favorire il muro lievemente inadeguato a valorizzare pienamente le singole performances (meritevoli di autentica lode). Questo disco più che un vero proprio PROG lo considererei come genere un ottimo symphonic metal anni ’90 (dobbiamo convincerci che Metal + ’90 non dà come risultato per forza i Black Sabbath…). D’altronde, questo richiamo “démodé” ci sembra confermato da una sorta di “dedica occulta” a dischi di Malmsteen come “Odissey”, nonché dalla netta antitesi espressa rispetto a correnti poliritmiche come il Djent.

It’s not easy to talk about PROG Metal. Those who love it do not explain it, those who explain it diminish it, those who play it leave it to the listener to understand its essence, its soul, its history. And it’s with a listener’s approach that we’re about to focus on DGM, a name which has been consolidating with a remarkable success in this niche market during their almost twenty-year career and with a formation that has been changing over time.
Right from the opening song, Hereafter, it’s possible to catch sight of the album style: energy and melody skillfully combined by our national quintet within a ruthless rhythm structure, which will be carried on through many other tracks. Enhancement and Not In Need flow like a dream, bravely switching melodies throughout a wider space with a pleasant result, handing on the baton to No Looking Back; this track is able to capture and carry since the first few starting notes within a storm of vibes. It’s not hard to imagine, in any live performance, the audience’s voice accompanying on Mark Basile during the chorus part.
Trapped marks a turning point: heavy, cinematic at times, worthy of a soundtrack on the key scenes of an adventure or a modern detective movie. The harmonies, which have been arranged by Emanuele Casali’s wise hand, introduce the listener to what will become a progressive blaze which will reach its peak with “…In a Movie”.
Away is the headbanging killer track: tough and energetic, with striking riffs but never failing to care about the melody, which, combining the two, gives a result worthy of a mythological setting. The electronic interventions (from trance, IDM to breakbeat) which introduce Heartache might have the diehard metalheads worrying, but it would be a pointless fear: also this track has quality in spades and it won’t disappoint them at all.
Rest in Peace and Brand New Blood, two classic power songs, lead the listener towards Fading & Falling which is the melancholic ballad for this album’s epilogue, characterized by adrenaline sounds, to say the least. This is the area where DGM prove to be mature enough to be able to transmit emotions without needing to turn to fast tempo and particular virtuosity either. Could it really end this way? We find Rose in the Wind as a bonus track, indeed not that brilliant in terms of innovation, but anyway it’s strong enough to make us believe that this band will not fail to please us for the years to come.
he album, on the whole, can be described as fully satisfying: the tracks have always been played in an impeccable way. The overall sound is very compressed, and the wall, slightly inappropriate to fully enhance any single performance (truly worthy of praise), seems to be favored. More than a PROG album, I would consider this cd as a belonging to an excellent symphonic metal genre in 90’s style (we must understand that Metal + 90’s does not necessarily equal Black Sabbath…). After all, it looks to us as that this old school reference is confirmed by some sort of “secret devotion” for some Malmsteen’s records like “Odissey”, as well as by the sharp contrast towards polyrhythmic subgenres like Djent.

Non e usor sa vorbesti despre Progressiv Metal. Cine iubeste acest gen muzical nu il explica, cine il explica ii da mai putina importanta decat merita de fapt, iar cine canta progressiv il lasa pe ascultator sa-i surprinda esenta, spiritul si traditia. Tocmai de aceea, cu emotia si curiozitatea tipice unui ascultator, vom asculta albumul celor de la DGM, un grup care si-a consolidat pozitia in acest gen inregistrand multe succese in cei peste 20 de ani de cariera.
Piesei “Hereafter” ii este incredintat inceputul albumului, un album a carui amprenta este posibil de individuat gratie energiei si muzicii imbinate cu intelepciune de catre acest grup intr-un ritm antrenant ce va caracteriza si multe dintre celelalte piese. “Enhancement” si “ Not In Need” curg lin, cu spatii ample ritmice, pentru a da apoi stafeta sunetelor din “No Looking Back”. Chiar de la primele note, aceasta bucata muzicala e capabila sa rapeasca si sa-l transporte pe ascultator intr-o furtuna de vibratii. Nu e greu de imaginat, in orice spectacol live, corul publicului dornic sa cante refrenul impreuna cu Mark Basile.
“Trapped” e o piesa surprinzatoare: dura, pe alocuri aproape cinematografica, demna de a deveni coloana sonora a unor scene limits dintr-un film de aventuri sau intr-unul politist. Armoniile create de mainile maiestre a le lui Emanuele Casali introduc ascultatorul in ceea ce va deveni un elogiu progressive ce va culmina cu “…In a Movie”.
“Away” sta sub semnul headbanging-ului: dur si energic, cu o serie de riff fara insa a se neglija muzica, creindu-se astfel un rezultat demn de o atmosfera mitologica. E posibil ca pasajele electronice (trance, IDM si breakbeat) ce deschid “Heartache” sa nu fie pe placul metalarilor intrasingenti, insa ar fi doar o senzatie de moment pentru ca aceasta piesa, in ansamblul ei, nu dezamageste deloc si are calitatea de a putea fi vanduta bine.
“Rest in Peace” si “Brand New Blood” sunt doua power songs de matrice calasica ce insotesc ascultatorul inspre “Fading & Falling”, adica inspre o balada melancolica, epilog al acestui album caracterizat de sonoritati adrenalinice. Astfel, cei de la DGM demonstreaza ca au ajuns la acel grad de maturitate care le permite sa transmita emotii fara sa fie nevoiti sa recurga la artificii. Dar putea albumul sa se termine aici? Evident, nu. Ca si bonus track i se ofera ascultatorului “Rose in the Wind”, o piesa poate nu excesiv de stralucitoare prin originalitate, insa destul de decisa in a arata ca acest grup ne va pregati surprize placute in anni ce vor urma.
Albumul satisface pe deplin gusturile asculatorului: piesele sunt interpretate in mod impecabil. Sunetul intregului disc este coerent si se tinde inspre valorizarea deplina a fiecarui artist. Fara indoiala, acest album este un adevarat produs progressiv, ce aduce cu un perfect symphonic metal din anii ’90 (trebuie sa intelegem ca Metal + ’90 nu are ca rezultat obligatoriu Black Sabbath…). Dealtfel, aceste note “demodate” par sa sugereze un soi de dedicatie oculta adusa discurilor lui Malmsteen ( “Odissey”) dar si o neta antiteza cu cea a curentelor poli-ritmice (Djent).
