Il duo milanese formato da Cecilia Miradoli e Max Tarenzi realizza un album che attinge a piene mani a sonorità e arrangiamenti della new wave, del synth rock degli anni 80 strizzando l’occhio al trip hop degli anni 90. Questo non vuol dire che ci troviamo di fronte a degli epigoni, ma si tratta di una produzione che ha comunque ben assorbito e rielaborato un linguaggio già ben codificato.
Del resto si sente il respiro cosmopolita del duo sia come musicisti che come organizzatori del festival “A night like this” , un evento che ha avuto il grande merito di ospitare realtà musicali divergenti e alternative del panorama internazionale in una suggestiva cornice paesaggistica.
Il brano d’apertura “Toy” è accompagnato da un video girato completamente in piano sequenza e ispirato alla performance “Cut Piece” di Yoko Ono, segno di un’attenzione anche ai linguaggi artistici più dirompenti.
Efficace l’arrangiamento della ritmica ossessiva e il lavoro delle chitarre che ben sottolineano il messaggio del testo rappresentando forse l’episodio più riuscito dell’album. Temi analoghi come la solitudine, l’empatia, l’alienazione compaiono in “Amy”, “Breaking” e “Cosmic tune”, una suadente ballad di chiusura impreziosita dalla vocalist e dai controcanti delle chitarre.
Dal punto di vista tecnico nulla da dire, il disco suona molto bene e ha un missaggio ben equilibrato grazie anche al contributo dei fonici d’oltralpe che hanno lavorato nei prestigiosi studi londinesi di Abbey Road. Nonostante i buoni arrangiamenti la scrittura dei brani rimane, a mio avviso, piuttosto consueta.

The Italian duo formed by Cecilia Miradoli and Max Tarenzi realizes an album that draws heavily on the sounds and arrangements of the new wave, the 80’s synth rock without forgetting the glorious trip hop of the 90s. Of course they do not represen epigones, but it is a production that has in any case well absorbed and re-elaborated an already well-coded language.
After all, the duo’s cosmopolitan mood is remarkable in them both as musicians and as organizers of the festival “A night like this”, an event that had the great merit of hosting divergent and alternative musical realities of the international scene in a suggestive landscape setting.
The opening piece “Toy” is accompanied by a video shot completely in sequence and inspired by the performance “Cut Piece” by Yoko Ono, to prove attention also to the most disruptive artistic languages. The arrangement is well done thanks to the obsessive rhythm and the guitars that well emphasize the lurics’ message representing perhaps the most successful episode of the album. Similar themes such as loneliness, empathy, alienation appear in “Amy“, “Breaking” and “Cosmic tune“, a persuasive closing ballad embellished by the vocalist and the guitars’ counterpoints. From a technical point of view nothing to say, the album sounds very good and has a well balanced mix thanks also to the contribution of the foreign sound engineers who worked in the prestigious Abbey Road studios in London. Despite the good arrangements the writing of the songs remains, in my opinion, quite usual.
