Per indiscutibili fattori di mercato c’è la tendenza dei produttori a sfornare prodotti cosiddetti “trasversali”, in grado di offrire funzioni che possano soddisfare il maggior numero possibile di utenti. Ti trovi quindi a comprare loopstation che hanno effetti per chitarra, effetti per voce che hanno loopstation integrate, amplificatori per chitarra acustica che però vanno bene per qualsiasi strumento, chitarre acustiche che suonano anche come classiche, amplificatori che simulano altri ampli…. Dopo tutte le esagerazioni c’è poi un ritorno all’essenziale. Ecco una loopstation che fa la loopstation: play/rec/overdub/erase … basta! Digitech ha spogliato la loopstation evoluta estraendone il componente minimo. La cosa interessante è che lo ha reso modulare, possiamo costruirci la nostra struttura… seguitemi!
Come funziona
Il meccanismo è semplicissimo. Come illustra il manuale minimal a corredo di ben 1 pagina (online c’è qualcosa in più comunque):
- 1 click per cominciare a registrare
- 1 altro click per fermare la registrazione ed andare in play
- 1 altro click per registrare sopra alla traccia precedente in overdub
- 1 pressione di qualche secondo per annullare l’ultima registrazione (undo)
- 1 pressione di qualche secondo se ci ripensiamo e vogliamo ripristinare l’ultima registrazione (redo)
- 2 click veloci per lo stop
- 1 click di 2 secondi per cancellare
3 luci led: rosso, giallo, verde, ne indicano lo stato.
E’ possibile registrare infinite tracce sovrapposte della stessa lunghezza della prima per un massimo di 10 minuti stereo (non si risparmia niente registrando mono, nel caso qualcuno me lo stesse per chiedere).
Avendo 2 canali mono in ingresso e 2 in uscita sarebbe possibile anche registrare contemporaneamente 2 strumenti.
JamMann
Il suono è molto pulito, si sentono i 24 bit. Il volume controlla il livello della traccia registrata. A pedale spento il suono di ingresso viene proiettato in uscita senza variazioni in quello che viene definito True Bypass.
Alimentazione.
La XT funziona con una batteria da 9 volts che si attiva inserendo un jack in ingresso. Tutto bene se non fosse che con un jack inserito, anche se spenta, la batteria continua ad essere utilizzata. Morale? Un paio d’ore con la loop spenta ed un jack inserito e dovete cambiare la batteria.
In alternativa è possibile acquistare un alimentatore 9V aggiuntivo (attacchi standard, facilmente reperibile anche non originale).
Loopstation Orchestra – la loopstation modulare
Ecco la cosa intrigante di questa loop. Sul retro c’è una porta Jamsync, un semplice jack da 1/8 stereo. Possiamo collegare 2 o più XT in serie creando la nostra personale loopstation con il numero di canali desiderato. Serve un cavetto 1/8 stereo per il sync per ogni pedale aggiuntivo e due cavetti audio jack 1/4 mono per collegare gli OUT di un pedale negli IN dell’altro. In questa catena comanda il primo pedale (master – Jamsync out) e l’audio esce dall’ultimo. Non sono indicati limiti numerici a questa serie.
Si aprono scenari interessanti. Cosa ne direste di un gruppo musicale con loopstation tutte sincronizzate tra di loro?
Attenzione però alla sincronizzazione. La tecnologia delle loop sul mercato ci ha abituato a sincronizzazioni basate sul tempo della traccia, sul clock midi, clock interno, tap, ecc. Qui non c’è niente. La sincronizzazione avviene basandosi sulla lunghezza della traccia della XT master (tutte le altre sono slave).
Questo vuol dire che il master registra una traccia e solo dopo uno degli slave (o più) può suonare una seconda traccia di lunghezza multipla della prima (non inferiore). Se si preme il rec di uno dei pedali slave mentre il master non ha ancora finito o è nel mezzo della riproduzione del loop la luce lampeggia per indicare che dobbiamo aspettare e che appena arriva il nostro giro la registrazione/riproduzione verrà attivata.
In ogni caso la cosa è stimolante!
Se la master va in STOP ci vanno anche tutti gli slave.
Si può sincronizzare oltre a XT Express anche la più evoluta JamMan Solo XT della Digitech. In pratica è come scomporre una loopstation in tanti pezzi e ogni componente ne suona uno in maniera sincronizzata.
Se la loopstation master cancella la propria memoria le atre non vengono cancellate. Ognuna è indipendente. In ogni caso in un’ipotesi del genere ogni loopstation deve cancellare la memoria autonomamente perché è improbabile che le tracce memorizzate possano essere riutilizzate con una nuova registrazione del master (non avendo una sincronizzazione basata su un click).
Falsi miti
Su molti siti, comprese alcune pagine dei distributori, c’è scritto “undo illimitati” (probabilmente derivante da una cattiva traduzione italiana poi rimbalzata in rete). Come in genere è per le loopstation hardware, non è vero!
Si può fare undo e redo illimitatamente ma sempre della stessa registrazione (inutile dunque se non si ha qualche patologia compulsiva…). Non si può quindi tornare a 3 registrazioni precedenti o fare sequenze di undo-undo ma solo undo-redo-undo-redo e così via!
Viene lodata da più parti una caratteristiche che ho trovato banale, forse sono io che non ho colto le sfumature o che sono abituato a loopstation che hanno questa funzione da sempre, il Silent Clear, marchio registrato Digitech… praticamente si può cancellare una traccia tenendo premuto per 2 secondi il pedale. Mah.
PRO
Fa quello che promette, suono pulito, semplice, minimo ingombro.
Struttura modulare. Prezzo abbordabile.
CONTRO
Forse per l’utente medio viziato è troppo minimale, non ha una cuffia, non un reverbero, insomma prevede un minimo di organizzazione per poterla utilizzare appieno.
Attenti al consumo della batteria.

Il video seguente mostra la connessione di 2 Jamman in configurazione master-slave e alcune semplici funzioni di utilizzo. Di fatto è come lavorare con una loopstation a 2 canali.
Nel video si può notare che se si tenta di attivare la seconda traccia prima che la prima abbia terminato il loop, questa si mette in attesa (lampeggia nello stato armed) e parte automaticamente quando è il suo turno.

How does it work
As the one-page-manual in the box makes us understand, it’s really easy (there’s more on the web if you want):
- 1 click to start recording
- 1 click to play the recorded part
- 1 click to overdub
- 1 long click to undo
- 1 long click if you want to redo
- 2 fast clicks to stop
- 1 long click to erase after stopped
3 led lights indicate the state: red (record), yellow (overdub), green (play)
You can overdub as many layers you want of the same length as the first one, for 10 minutes maximum (stereo)
Having 2 input channels it’s possibile to record 2 mono instruments at the same time (no independent volumes)
JamMann
The sound is really clean, 24 bits. The volume knob controls the level of the recorded track. If the JamMan is switched off the input sound goes directly to the out port. It’s the Digitech True Bypass
Power supply
XT works with a common 9V battery. The supply circuit is activated by the input jack. Don’t forget the jack in because even if the pedal is switched off it will very quick empty the battery.
You can also buy the additional 9V external power supply (it’s a common pedal power supply, easy to find).
Loopstation Orchestra – the modular loop-station
The interesting thing of this little looper is the possibility of building a chain using the Jamsync port (a simple 1/8 stereo jack).
You can connect 2 or more pedals to build your own loop-station, with as many channels you need. You need one 1/8 stereo jack to connect the Jamsync out of one pedal with the Jamsync IN of the other, 2 mono 1/4 cables to connect the OUT ports of the first one to the second (and so on if you continue the chain). You’ll take the audio out from the last one of the serie.

Just two words about the synchronization system. You’ll be probably used to have midi sync, internal clock, tap… you’ll find nothing here! The sync is based on the length of the first loop, the master (all the others are called slaves)
This means that while the master is recording the first track nobody else can record anything. After that, the other pedals can record tracks with a length multiple of the first. If you try to record or stop recording too soon, the red light starts blinking to indicate you have to wait. When it’s our turn the slave pedal starts recording (or playing). It’s like you arm the pedal waiting for your turn.
Btw, it’s a funny thing to think.
If the master stops all the slaves will be stopped.
JamMan XT Express can be synchronized with Digitech JamMan Solo XT too. It’s like a loop-station decomposition in many synchronized elements.
Silent Clear
On Digitech website they praise the new Silent Clear. It’s just the way you can delete the recorded track pressing for 2 seconds the button (“is the first looper to feature DigiTech’s new Silent Clear”). I saw it before. Mah…
In a chain each pedal is independent. If the master clears its memory the others are not affected.

It does what it promises. Clean, easy, small.
Modular. Easy price.
CONS
This minimal loop-station is probably too minimal for the common customer.
Be careful with the 9V battery consume.
