Addictive Drums è un ottimo plugin di batterie acustiche (e non) della casa XLN Audio. Il software è a pagamento ma è disponibile una demo senza limiti di tempo e senza interruzioni audio in formato VST, AU e RTAS.

Addictive Drums, oltre ad avere ottimi samples di batteria e centinaia di groove e fill nella sua libreria, integra nell’interfaccia un comodissimo mixer con insert effects, fader con livelli per ogni pezzo della batteria e per overhead, riverberi e ovviamente un master.

SampleTank Free è una versione perfettamente funzionante del campionatore SampleTank 2 ma con alcune limitazioni.
È possibile importare solo la libreria creata apposta per questa versione gratuita (500mb di campioni), ma chiaramente la funzione import non è abilitata e i preset utenti sono disabilitati.
A parte queste limitazioni, il software mette a disposizione moltissime feature per un campionatore che ha poco da invidiare ai concorrenti più in vista del settore.

Distorsione, filtro passa basso, compressore e master/mix in un solo plugin: CamelCrusher. Questo plugin multieffetto della CamelAudio risulta ottimo quando si vogliono risparmiare slot per effetti, magari in progetti già stracolmi di plugin, o semplicemente per sfruttare questi effetti con pochi controlli e facilmente. Personalmente lo uso spessisimo quasi esclusivamente per il filtro che trovo più “caldo” dei classici passa-basso spesso in dotazione nelle DAW.

Automat è stato uno dei primi sintetizzatori virtual analog gratuiti in formato AU Universal Binary (all’esordio dei Mac Intel). Le prime beta erano un po’ scarne e non tutte le funzioni erano realmente accessibili, ma già da un po’ è disponibile la prima versione non beta, la 1.01, molto stabile e ricca di feature che ogni VA dovrebbe avere:
* sintesi sottrattiva
* oscillatori con antialias e hard-sync
* filtri e amp con ADSR
* modulator con tempo sync
* waveshaper / eq
* stereo-delay con filtro e tempo sync
* modulated spatial effect
* poly-, unisono and legato-mode

Automat si presta benissimo alla creazione di lead o pad dal sapore analogico (e non), mentre per i bassi è necessario integrare qualche effetto esterno per rendere il suono più deciso.

Esistono ormai una miriade di plugin delay/echo commerciali e gratuiti per tutte le esigenze e spesso svolgono già un ottimo lavoro gli stessi plugin interni delle DAW. Bouncy, invece, estremizza il concetto di delay stravolgendo i canoni di tutti questi plugin offrendo un effetto “complicato” ma facilmente configurabile. Per descrivere questo effetto bastano le semplici parole con cui l’autore, nella sua pagina, commenta il proprio plugin: “Adesso TU puoi saltare come Aphex Twin”.

Se siete nostalgici dei giochi delle vecchie console a 8bit o se semplicemente dovete ricreare le sonorità di quei chip audio retrò, Magical 8bit è il plugin che fa al caso vostro. Ovviamente i controlli a disposizione sono pochi proprio per emulare le funzioni limitate generalmente disponibili nelle vecchie console: forma d’onda (quadra, pulse, triangolare o noise), volume/gain, ADSR e Pitch Bend range.

Mr. Alias 2 è un particolarissimo sintetizzatore che sfrutta degli oscillatori senza limite di banda che possono essere trasposti fino ed oltre la frequenza di Nyquist. Questo porta inevitabilmente al classico effetto “aliasing”, tanto odiato nei sintetizzatori digitali o nei campionatori, che però in questo caso viene sfruttato per creare sonorità ambigue ma decisamente interessanti grazie anche ai parametri messi a disposizione nell’interfaccia.

Nell’articolo precedente abbiamo parlato di Togu TAL-Elek7ro, questa volta invece vi mostriamo il virtual analog TAL-BassLine.
Potremmo definirlo un clone del Roland SH-101, questo plugin è ottimo, come suggerisce il nome, per la creazione di suoni di basso sintetici dal sapore vintage.
Rappresenta una buona alternativa gratuita al più famoso plugin della Novation BassStation.
L’architettura interna è grosso modo la classica di ogni virtual analog e comprende:

* Sub-oscillator: square -1 oct., square -2 oct., pulse -1 oct, pulse -2 oct

Se volete dare un tocco di “antico” alle vostre registrazioni o se semplicemente avete bisogno dell’effetto vinile per una produzione, Vinyl mette a disposizione diversi parametri per personalizzarne ogni aspetto. È possibile infatti scegliere persino il tipo di modello di giradischi oltre che ovviamente il volume del rumore, la presenza dell’effetto disturbo elettrico e altri dettagli come la quantità di graffi e la presenza di polvere sul disco.

Concludiamo questa raccolta con un plugin forse un po’ più datato rispetto ai precedenti ma ancora valido dal punto di vista sonoro. Triple Cheese è un sintetizzatore dall’interfaccia un po’ spartana ma dalle potenzialità sonore decisamente interessanti per un plugin free. Ottimo per la creazione di pad o texture sonore molto “spesse” classiche degli anni ’80.

SampleTank Free is a fully functional version of the sampler SampleTank 2 with some limitations.
You can import only the library created for this free version (500mb of samples), clearly the import function is not enabled and user presets are disabled.
Apart from these restrictions, the software offers many features for a sampler that has little to envy the most prominent competitors in the industry.

Distortion, low-pass filter, compressor, and master/mix in a single plugin: CamelCrusher. This multi-effects plug-in by CamelAudio is excellent when you want to save slots for effects, even in projects that are already crammed with plugins, or simply to take advantage of these effects easily with few controls. Personally I use it almost exclusively for the filter I find most “warm” then classic low-pass often included in DAWs.

Automat was one of the first free AU Universal Binary virtual analog synthesizers. The first beta was a bit thin and not all functions were really accessible, but now the first beta version, the 1.01, is available, very stable and feature rich that every VA should have:

Nowadays there are a lot of delay/echo plugins free or commercial, and often DAWs default plugins do the job well. Bouncy, takes the delay concept a step forward providing a plugin with a “complicated” effect but easily configurable. The author says in its plugin page: “Now YOU can bounce like an Aphex Twin.”

If you’re nostalgic of old games and 8bit consoles or if you simply have to recreate the sounds of those retro audio chips, Magical 8bit is the right plugin for you. We conclude this collection with a plugin, maybe a little more dated than the previous, but still valid in terms of sound. Triple Cheese is a synthesizer with a “spartan” interface but sounds very interesting for a free plugin. Great for making sound textures or very “thick” pads of the 80s.
