Audio Unit (abbreviato AU) è il formato dei plug-in, sia effetti che strumenti, per OSX. È il formato utilizzato da molti programmi in ambito audio (e audio/video) come GarageBand, Logic, SoundTrack Pro, Final Cut, Ableton Live, AULab e molti altri. Con l’avvento dei Mac con processori Intel, è stato necessario introdurre le versioni Universal Binary (abbreviato UB) degli AudioUnit. Attenzione, se troviamo degli AudioUnit non Universal Binary, non potremmo utilizzarli se abbiamo un Mac con processore Intel.
Come installare gli AudioUnit che non sono provvisti di un programma di installazione automatica?
È molto semplice, se ci troviamo di fronte un file DMG (una sorta di archivio/immagine) basta cliccarci due volte sopra per montarlo e renderlo visibile come unità (o sul desktop o sul finder). Se all’interno del pacchetto non è presente nessun installer, ma solo il file del plugin (generalmente con estenzione .component) basterà copiare questo file nella cartella /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components ed il gioco è fatto.

www.voxengo.com/group/free-vst-plugins/ – Una collezione di effetti (in questo caso anche VST) della nota casa Voxengo, gratuiti e pronti all’uso. Sono presenti, tra i tanti, EQ, amplificatore virtual (Virtual Tube Amp), Delay e Reverb.
www.airwindows.com – Scorrendo la pagina iniziale della softwarehouse AirWindows, troviamo una grossa raccolta di AudioUnit gratuiti, comprendenti una serie di effetti tra cui: flanger, chorus, overdrive, simulazioni di vari effetti analogici.
www.ohmforce.com/UseFreeSoftware.do?action=freeware – Ohm Force è un’azienda francese specializzata nello sviluppo di plugin audio. Mette a disposizione un ottimo filtro risonante (Frohmage) e un simpatico virtual instrument con diversi preset pronti per essere usati o modificati (Symptohm).
kunz.corrupt.ch – Abbiamo già parlato di Togu Audio Line in qualche scorso articolo. Ottimi virtual instruments gratuiti in formato AU universal binary (ma anche VST). Da provare assolutamente il Vocoder e il BassLine (emulazione del classico Roland SH-101)

How to insall AudioUnits which aren’ t provided with an automatic installer?
