L’Equalizzatore o Eq è, insieme al Compressore, uno dei due “strumenti” indispensabili al fonico per lavorare sul suono.
Qualsiasi ripresa microfonica, ma anche un semplice loop o groove campionato, ha bisogno, in fase di Mix e/o Mastering, di essere smussata o enfatizzata su alcune frequenze per permettere che il suono possa essere modellato sull’intero spettro sonoro.
I tecnici paragonano l’Eq alla tavolozza di colori di un pittore che, con uso sapiente, riesce a tirar fuori colori e sfumature anche utilizzando solo poche tinte.
Nel video troverete confronti tra Eq hardware e software dello stesso marchio (Focusrite) e confronti tra software diversi, in modo tale che si possa avere un’idea precisa, ma comunque obiettiva, di come agire con tale strumento.
Ancora una volta è Pasquale Faggiano, fonico del Recoa Studio, ad aver interpretato un’idea di Flavio Gargano che, lungimirante su modelli di istruzione a video, ha anticipato ciò che oggi è un modello diffuso di Video Corsi su scala internazionale.
Ultimo doveroso appunto: anche se il fine è istruttivo, ho cercato di mantenere la qualità dell’audio quanto più verosimile all’originale, in modo che con un sistema di casse adeguato, o meglio ancora con delle cuffie di qualità, si possano apprezzare tutte le sfumature che vengono proposti, di volta in volta, negli esempi video.

The Equalizer also known as Eq is, along with the Compressor, one of the engineers’ two essential “instruments” to work on the sound.
Any microphonic recording, but also a simple loop or sampled groove, needs, during the Mix or/and Mastering process, to be rounded and boosted on some frequencies in order to let the sound be shaped throughout its entire spectrum.
Engineers use to compare the Eq to a painter’s palette which, with a skillful use, is capable of creating colours and nuances even if using just a few tints.
In this video you will find some comparisons among same-brand software and hardware Eqs (Focusrite) and among different ones, so that you can have a clear head, as well as unprejudiced, on how to deal with such instrument.
Once again Pasquale Faggiano, sound engineer at the Recoa Studio, happens to be the interpreter of Flavio Gargano’s idea who, farsighted about methods in education trough video, anticipated what today has become a widespread model of tutorial videos on an international scale.
One last note: although the purpose of this series is educational, I tried to maintain the audio quality as close to the original so that, with a proper speaker system, or rather with some high quality headphones, you can be able to enjoy each nuance that has been presented, one by one, through the examples during the video.
