The Right Sound 3 - The Equalizer

Alfred Capozzi

The catalog of video tutorials made available by RPM Edizioni and MIDImarket.it touches, in this episode, the use of the Equalizer, a real operative scalpel in the hands of the sound engineer. Reason why…, make yourself comfortable!

Equalizer

The Equalizer o Eq together with the Compressor, it is one of the two indispensable “tools” for the engineer to work on the sound.
Any microphone take, but even a simple loop or sampled groove, needs, in phase Mix and / or Mastering, to be smoothed or emphasized on certain frequencies to allow the sound to be modeled on the entire sound spectrum.
The technicians compare the Eq to the color palette of a painter who, with skilful use, manages to bring out colors and shades even using only a few shades.
In the video you will find comparisons between Eq hardware e with of the same brand (Focusrite) and comparisons between different software, so that you can have a precise but still objective idea of how to act with this tool.

Once again it is Pasquale Faggiano, sound engineer of Retrieve Studio, to have interpreted an idea of Flavio Gargano who, far-sighted on video education models, anticipated what is now a widespread model of Video Courses on an international scale.

Last but not least: even if the purpose is instructive, I tried to keep the audio quality as close to the original as possible, so that with an adequate speaker system, or better still with quality headphones, you can appreciate all the nuances that are proposed, from time to time, in the video examples.

Good vision!

This new installment from the tutorial video series by RPM Edizioni and MIDImarket.it is about the use of the Equalizer, a real surgical scalpel in audio engineers' hands. So…, make yourself comfortable!

The Equalizer Also known as Eq is, along with the Compressor, one of the engineers' two essential “instruments” to work on the sound.
Any microphonic recording, but also a simple loop or sampled groove, needs, during the Mix or/and Mastering process, to be rounded and boosted on some frequencies in order to let the sound be shaped throughout its entire spectrum.
Engineers use to compare the Eq to a painter's palette which, with a skillful use, is capable of creating colors and nuances even if using just a few tints.
In this video you will find some comparisons among same-brand software and hardware Eqs (Focusrite) and among different ones, so that you can have a clear head, as well as unprejudiced, on how to deal with such instrument.
Once again Pasquale Faggiano, sound engineer at the Recoa Studio, happens to be the interpreter of Flavio Gargano's idea who, farsighted about methods in education through video, anticipated what today has become a widespread model of tutorial videos on an international scale.
One last note: although the purpose of this series is educational, I tried to maintain the audio quality as close to the original so that, with a proper speaker system, or rather with some high quality headphones, you can be able to enjoy each nuance that has been presented, one by one, through the examples during the video.

Enjoy the video!
