Let's exchange a few words with Guido Arbonelli, internationally renowned clarinetist, standard-bearer of music Klezmer in Italy and in the world.
First, tell us a few words about Klezmer
Il klezmer it is a musical moment dedicated to those who have suffered. Dance and ceremony music, but also music handed down through the oral tradition of people who were persecuted during the Shoah by the Nazis throughout Europe. It is lively music that must always be played with this type of consciousness veiled by melancholy. A great history of music that unfortunately is little known.
From what and from what the genre is characterized?
From effects!!! It's like playing contemporary music with tones and themes. How to speak through the instrument by replacing the voice of the muezzin which calls people to prayer. We must forget the classic notions, we throw ourselves into a world of inner communication where, with many effects, we will get to know our instrument better.
What tools are used?
Violins, percussion, even keyboards (editor's note today often replacing the cymbalom)…. but the clarinet is the prince. Instrument with powerful sound that ranges between all possible and imaginable dynamics.
What role does the clarinet play?
Basic!!! It is the thematic instrument that brings counterpoint to the violin. It is the instrument that with particular effects communicates the joyful theme, laughter, with pianissimo the great intimacy, with the explosions of sound ... suffering and tears.
Klezmer is sometimes spoken of as a kind of ethnic jazz, is there an effective relationship with jazz?
If jazz is refined so yes. I don't mean jam sessions where everyone plays the same way for hours. The true jazz it is research, it is the "anticipation" of the accompaniment, it is the choice of sounds also mixed in the contemporary. In this case I see a lot of closeness in freedom of expression.
