Triplet of videos for what is objectively the most complex and difficult acoustic instrument to record: the drums. The three videos tell about three phases of audio production in which the drums, as in almost all modern acoustic genres, must be taken into due consideration.
The first of the videos is dedicated to the actual recording. Choice of microphones, positioning, quantity, environment,… become fundamental parameters for obtaining effective results.
Massimo Vangone, drummer of the video, introduces us to some problems related to this instrument.
During the recording phases you will notice how some operational choices (pre-mixing, use of the counterphase, ...) can already give a clear idea of what the final sound of the rhythm part of the song will be.
In second video we pass to the action of mixing: also in this case the choice of levels, the use of the dynamics plug-ins and the equalizer, beyond a personal empirical action, remains anchored to standard procedures that allow overall optimization of time and results. Nothing prevents, obviously, that the desire to experiment does not lead to extreme use of the materials available.
Finally, our friend Pasquale Faggiano del RecoaStudio, tries to reconstruct the same sounds previously recorded with virtual plug-ins. Also in this case you have excellent teaching material available from which you can draw for the construction of an effective rhythm even only via software.
The usual final note: given that, in the first video in particular, there will also be pre-mixing situations that inevitably also involve the use of the push-pull, different sound details will not be heard except with reference speakers or headphones.
It seems anachronistic to talk about these things today with what is available on YouTube, but carefully evaluate the production effort of RPM Edizioni at the time.
Good Listening!
