Via costumes, deck chairs and buckets. In 2010 there is no room for carefree and cheerful tones of “Management”. And to think that only two years ago they had conquered the globe with their summer indie freak, capable of giving pieces like "Time To Pretend", "Kids" and "Electric Feel" ... And now, while everyone was ready to enjoy the next cd of genius style "Oracular Spectacular", MGMT stunned everyone by presenting an album that does not even want to hear about sand. “Congratulations” is a sort of book written in the mid-Sixties, which has come up to date with continuous modifications and new recordings undergone over the years. It is a concentration of different smells, of different nostalgia, of different thoughts, a continuous quotationism (Flaming Lips above all) remastered according to the matrix of two young Connecticut freakettoni.
The opening of "It's Working"Is all a program, a sort of surf-rock reinterpreted in psychedelic guises: the Beach Boys who go to dinner with Pink Floyd, the marked bass that acts as a springboard for guitars and vocals, which together with a essential and functional drumming outlines the acid and colorful hues of the piece. "Song For Dan Treacy " it is an equally psychedelic ballad, of those that have not been listened to for quite some time: 4 minutes of vague sounds yet wisely recomposed by that pinch of indie rock that is perceived under the skin. The 2 minutes of "Someone's Missing"Give a first touch of surrealism, voice with guitar and synth intertwine in a reassuring melody to lead to an" old "MGMT style closure (the more jaunty ones, so to speak), with the voice of Andrew VanWyngarden that for a moment brings back to mind "Time To Pretend”… But don't get used too much, because the effect lasts a few moments. The 12 minutes of "Siberian breaks"In fact represent the perfect antithesis of the previous track: 5 songs merge into one, linked together by a thin thread of retro melancholy. It starts with the usual marked bass line to shoulder an acoustic guitar, then here is the fade into a ballad style that seems to have been thought by Bob Dylan under the effect of some acid; the turn of the 80s dance drum sounds comes to take the stage, but a moment later the climate changes ... a sort of storm leads back to the ballad punctuated by melancholy synths, swept away by music that vehemently takes up the scene, between electronics , psychedelia, indie pop, '60s and distortions ... In the end you risk not understanding much, but the dominant intuition is that clearly the “Management” are damned geniuses. "Flash delirium”Should be the subject of careful listening for any indie rock band! Successful melodies and choruses of yesteryear bring out a terribly fascinating mix, the synths support choruses that are first melodious and clean and then tangled and crazy, all to result in a hysterical and schizoid conclusion. With "I Found A Whistle"Let go of the moorings of the mind and let oneself be carried away by full atmospheres and strong emotional tints, a melancholy song that slips away up to"Brian Eno", Where the beat is king for a few minutes, the drums run off followed by the guitars, the eccentric voice of VanWyngarden has the task of delineating the melodic trajectories, the rockabilly flavor is flavored by the unmistakable style that characterizes the whole cd, in which there is also a small jazz interlude. The nightmares of "Lady Dada", that is "Lady Dada's Nightmare”, Strongly resemble the soundtrack of a sad and melancholy film but with the inevitable happy ending that is perceived in the air. The closing is entrusted to “Congratulations”, piano virtuosity open to the most immediate song of the cd, soft guitars and essential drums create a new plot of the single indie rock type. Indulge yourself with the 43 minutes of "Congratulations“In search of more or less veiled similarities is a fascinating and intriguing game, yet this is anything but a cd made of covers. Go and trust MGMT: you expect the catchphrase and they leave you with a question mark in your hand, which among other things remains until the end of the CD and even after, but which does not cause annoyance, indeed it leaves you with a smile on your face and with the fixed thought that in those 43 minutes you could not have done anything better.
