Sample Creator - Styles with Audio Drums

Umberto Sorbo

Sample Creator is a company specializing in the creation of styles and sounds for Yamaha arrangers, which has recently produced several original style and sound packs.

Maurice Philisdeo (professional singer and musician) and his collaborators worked together to give more personality to Yamaha arranger, but above all to give "character" to that sound that is often lacking in the sounds and styles supplied by the parent company.

Maurice Philisdeo

The work philosophy of Sample Creator consists in bringing within the arranger the ten-year experience of musicians who play live, which is thus made available to those who work not only in places where the public is entertained with music, but also to those who play within the walls home. The basic idea is the use of Audio Drums in the styles, with a level of realism not possible with the basic drum kits present in the arrangers.

Audio Drums

Usually the rhythm part of an arranger style consists of one sequence of MIDI notes that play the samples of the drum kit on the keyboard. So basically a style is nothing more than a midifile played in an “interactive” way by the musician.

Sample Creator uses a completely different system and uses drum audio samples, called "Audio Drum"

But drum sample loops are not just inserted into the style, because they are first transformed into Recycle rx2 of the fu Propeller head today Reason Studios..

Recycle - Golino Drums

The drum audio file is “split” into many sample slices and at the same time the timing information is stored. In this way, you can play the original loop, playing all the slices in sequence.

The result is the ability to adjust the tempo of the drum audio in the style more precisely and without the classic defects due to time stretch, which makes the loop unusable when you slow down / speed it up too much.

Golino Packs

Il Maestro Alfred Golino needs no introduction, but we briefly recall that he has received various awards, such as a Telegatto as best musician, two gold records as producer and arranger and as an artist, various awards from specialized music organizations and also a GRAMMY Awards 2001 as a musician for participation in the album Alejandro Sanz, Spanish artist with more than 10 million records sold worldwide.

He has great Italian record successes behind him, both as a musician and co-producer and as a co-arranger, we remember one among many the one with Mina and Massimiliano Pani, son, producer and arranger of Mina, with whom he established a working relationship that led him to make national and international productions.

M ° Alfredo Golino

The Golino series embraces different styles, I got to try the Golino pack 1 which contains 10 styles mainly pop, 8, 12 and 16 bit, while i Golino pack 2 and 3 contain both pop and traditional ones (tarantella, polka, cha cha cha, etc.)

There is a rumba in style Pino Daniele, a samba and other interesting styles, for completeness I report the list:

  • 8 Beat 64, 64 BPM style ballad with electric guitars
  • 8 Beat Italian, perfect style for example for a cover of "And I think of you"
  • 12 Beat, I advise you to listen to the version of “Rhymes for a dream” that you find on the web interpreted by Filisdeo himself.
  • 16 Beat style perfect for example for a cover of "Ci Vorbbe un Amici"
  • Nature Beat, I heard a very interesting version with "This Masquerade"
  • Total Groove, a nice groove with a marked bass rhythm
  • EasyDown, featuring a beautiful rhythmic bass shuffle and Hammond organ
  • Unknown, style inspired by the typical sounds of Incognito
  • Daniel Rumba, style dedicated to Pino Daniele
  • Merry Samba, a samba with a guitar Main A, followed by a bass rhythm

Golino Pack 1 occupa 108 MB and is compatible with GENOS, PSR-S970, PSR-S975, TYROS 5, PSR-SX900, PSR-S770 e PSR-SX700.

The main difference between Genos and other keyboards is primarily about cutting the FLASH memory which is three Gigabytes (it is the memory available to the user where to load the various packs), moreover, the mixer manages 28 processors effect simultaneously on the parts of the style.

The programming of the styles can be done in order to exploit the capacity of the Genos, for example to insert a compressor on the electric piano and a flanger on a guitar, a reverb on another instrument.

The Genos is therefore the most powerful arranger at the moment and therefore although the styles are compatible with all arrangers, on Genos the final sound is richer and more engaging.

The samples of each pack are all loaded into memory, Sample Creator has prepared its packs to run on all Yamaha models.

Drum Setup & Assembly

All the material supplied with the Golino pack 1 (but in general also with the other packs) it can be reused to be assembled with the other styles present on the arranger (therefore not necessarily of the Sample Creator).

This possibility therefore allows us to reuse the pack to "refresh" some other style that we like, but which does not have the right "push" we need.

With the function Drum Setups of the Yamaha arranger, it is possible to edit all the parts of the YAMAHA drum kits using the rx2 grooves that come from the styles of the Sample Creator.

We can then modify or create a drum kit by reusing the samples we like best from the Golino pack.

Indeed, with the function instead, it will be possible to build a new style using the variations coming from the Golino Pack.

Revolution Algorithm

These days Sample Creator announced "Revolution Algorithm", In collaboration with sound engineers and professional musicians including Drap Sound of Rome, Cyrus Manna, Federico Luongo, Riccardo D'acunto e Christian Capasso.

Simply put, not only is the drum part an audio loop, but the remaining parts as well.

So at the moment battery, guitar e Bass, but soon also winds e other tools.

C. Capobianco, M. Filisdeo, A.Siotto "Sample Creator"

Revolution Algorithm is a workflow di Sample Creator that manages to produce a style, where there are synchronized audio rhythmic parts (mono or polyphonic) that respond to the time stretching andharmony.

All types of chords (and their inversions) recognized by the arranger are managed and it will also be possible to sample other types of instruments and insert them in the styles.

It should be noted that all the riffs were played by real musicians (they are therefore not made on the computer).

Conclusions

Golino Pack 1 offers well-made styles with a great sound.

The creation of the styles is the result of a working philosophy with obsessive attention to sound and performance, the result of the experience of those who use live the material that is then put into the styles.

The accompaniment part is well calibrated and enhances the singer or musician with non-invasive parts.

The style production of Sample Creator embraces all genres with a shocking sound that always leaves you surprised by the taste in the choice of groove.

At the end of this review I am left with that sense of surprise similar to when we visit a renovated house (in this case my arranger Genos) and we are struck by the new colors and furnishings.

Golino Pack 1 it is therefore a recommended product for those who want to have a more realistic and credible sound.
