Cube Loose - Shapes and Crystals

It will be the assonance with the well-known Steinberg software, but at first glance with the cover of this Cube Loose album I expected something closer to electronics. When the first track began to move the cones of my speakers, it took only a few seconds to understand that this "Forme e Cristalli", by the Roman band with a bit of Naples in the blood, had little to do with electronics and how much synthetic the concept can recall.

It must be said that from a first listen, one of the aspects that struck me most is the large dose of contamination present in the music of this band. It is obvious how the nine tracks of "Forms and Crystals”Are the result of a targeted research and a very successful attempt to unite genres and sound forms typical of the Italian singer-songwriter to musical worlds that differ so much, both geographically and stylistically.

Vittorio Fontana - Voice, bass, percussion
As the tracks flow through my player, the references to the champions of the author's song of our country are inevitable, reminiscences of Fossati, Conte and Capossela jump to the ears and accompany us throughout the journey.
Fortunately, the reference to Italian songwriters is only a starting point, the typical structure of the author's song is immediately supported by stylistic choices that seem to have no restrictions on sound and arrangement.
From this skilful mixture of elements 9 songs-gems of jazz, bossa nova, folk, prog, bathed by the Mediterranean sea. What has left me fascinated is the apparent simplicity with which Cube Loose manage to make all these elements coexist in the aforementioned song-form. But it is enough to read the credits of the album to realize that the five members of the band have to their credit years of experience at very high levels of the Italian music scene. In my opinion, this is the secret weapon of the project, four excellent musicians each with great versatility and even greater sensitivity, who join forces to produce something beautiful. Beautiful for how it is composed but mainly for how it is played and for the large dose of talent that transpires from every note. “Forme e Cristalli” is certainly not an innovative album, it is certainly not an experimental album, but it is certainly a thick album, a poetic album but mainly an album full of Art.
Already from the first listening you realize that the right "cards" are all there: refined texts, classy arrangements, perfect joints between the musicians, excellent choice of sounds and "colors" constantly able to evoke the sunny atmospheres of the Mediterranean and alternate them with apparent simplicity to those smoky gods jazz club.
The retro taste of this album is the added value to the romanticism and poetry that characterize it.
In the reviews it is usual to recommend a particular song, but in this case it is really difficult, in my opinion "Forme e cristal" must be considered in its entirety, it is an album that flows fluid and balanced from the first to the last second. The atmospheres of "Sometimes Margherita","Orchestra"And Placido Mandingo, the persuasive "Exotida". A really nice trip and really difficult to grasp the essence of this work if you don't consider it in its entirety, this is not an mp3 player disc, this is a work to listen to in front of a good vintage rum and maybe a Cuban cigar, even better if they printed it in vinyl.

Maybe for the similarity with the well-known software of Steinberg, but at first sight with the cover of this album by the Cube Loose I was expecting something closer to electronic music. When the first track began to move my speakers, it took a few seconds to realize that this “Forme e Cristalli”, by the Roman band with a bit of Naples in the blood, has little in common with electronic music and with everything can invoke the concept of synthetic.

It must be said that since the first listen, one of the things that struck me most is the large amount of contamination present in the music of this band. It's clear that the nine tracks of “Forme e Cristalli” are the result of a targeted research and a successful attempt to combine genres and musical forms of the Italian songwriting with musical worlds that deviate from them, both geographically and stylistically.
As the tracks go by, there are inevitable references to the paladins of our country's songwriting, something of Fossati, Conte and Capossela jump to the ears and accompanies us throughout the trip.
Luckily, the references to Italian singers are just a starting point, the typical structure of songwriting, is immediately supported by stylistic choices that seem not to give any restriction about the sound and arrangement.
From this blend of elements born 9 Songs – gems of jazz, bossa nova, folk, prog, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. What left me fascinated is the apparent simplicity with which the Cube Loose manage to bring together all these elements in the aforementioned song format. It's enough to read the credits of the cd to realize that the five band-members have years of experience in very high levels of the Italian music scene. In my opinion, this is the secret weapon of the project: four excellent musicians, each with a great versatility and even greater sensitivity, who join their forces to produce something beautiful. Beautiful for how it's composed, mainly, but above all for how it's played and for the large amount of talent that oozes from every note. “Forme e Cristalli” is certainly not an innovative album, is certainly not an experimental album, but it's definitely a profound album, a poetic album but mostly an soaked-in-art-album.
From the first listen you realize that the “cards” are all right: refined texts, classy arrangements, perfect joints between the musicians, excellent choice of sounds and “colors” constantly able to evoke the atmosphere of the cheerful Mediterranean Sea and alternate them with apparent simplicity to those of smoky jazz clubs.
The “retrò” feel of this album is an added value to the romance and poetry that characterize it.
In the reviews it's usual to recommend a particular song, but on this occasion it is really difficult, in my opinion “Forme e Cristalli” shall be considered in its entirety, it's an album that seems to flow from the first to the last second, balanced. Particularly cheerful the atmosphere of “Sometimes Margherita”, “Orquestra” and Placido Mandingo; mellow “Esodida” it's a sure emotional impact. This album is a really nice trip and it's really hard to capture the essence of this work unless it is considered in its entirety: this is not an album for an mp3 player, this is something to be heard in front of a good vintage rum and maybe a Cuban cigar, even better in lp.

It will be the similarity with the well-known Steinberg software, but in a first impression of the scope of this Loose Cube album I was hoping for something more in electronic music. When the first track began to move the cones of the high voices, a few seconds were enough to understand that this “Forms and Crystals”, of the Roman band with a little of Naples in the blood, had little to do with electronics and with all the synthesis that can remember the concept.

You have to decide that from the first listen, one of the things that most caught my attention is the great amount of contamination present in the music of this band. It is evident that the new tracks of “Forms and Crystals” are the result of a specific research and a successful intent to combine genres and musical forms of Italian composers in musical worlds that are distant from them, both geographically and stylistically.
Considering that the tracks happen in my reader, the references to the champions of the author's song from our country are inevitable, reminiscences of Fossati, Conte and Capossela stand in our eyes and accompany us throughout the journey.
Fortunately, references to Italian composers are only a point of departure, the typical structure of the author's song is supported immediately by the stylistic choices which seem not to have any kind of restriction regarding the sound and the layout.
Of this mix of elements born 9 songs – joys of jazz, bossa nova, folk, progressive – learned by the Mediterranean Sea. What fascinated me is the apparent ease with which the Loose Cubes are arranged to combine all these elements in the format of the previously mentioned song.
But it is enough to read the credits of the album to know that the five members of the band have years of experience reaching high levels of the Italian musical scene. In my opinion, this is the secret weapon of the project, four excellent musicians, each endowed with great versatility and greater sensitivity, which combine their strengths to produce such goodness. Good for the way it is composed but mainly for how it is played and for the great clarity of talent that makes every note. “Forme e Cristalli” is certainly not an innovative album nor certainly an experimental album, but it is definitely a profound album, a poetic album, but above all an album full of art.
From the first listen one realizes that the "cards" are all: refined lyrics, classy arrangements, perfect accents between the musicians, excellent selection of sounds and "colors" constantly capable of evoking the luminous atmospheres of the Mediterranean and alternating them with apparent ease with humbling ones of the jazz clubs.
The “retro” style of this album is the value added to romanticism and the poetry that characterizes it.
In critics it is usual to recommend a song in particular but in this case it is very difficult; In my opinion, “Forme e Cristalli” must be considered in its entirety, it is an album that flows equally from the first to the last. Especially warm the environments of “A veces Margherita”, “Orquesta” and Placido Mandingo, I am sure the persuasive “Exotida” is moving. It is really a very pleasant journey and it is really difficult to capture the essence of this work, unless it is considered in its entirety, this is not an album for a producer mp3, this is a work to be heard before a good ron de época and sometimes with a pure Cuban, even better it was published on vinyl.

4. Exotic
5. Placido Mandingo

Guitarist, teacher, arranger and for some time also blogger. If they took away his music he would have serious difficulties in finding a place in society and would be forced to wander aimlessly in the charming town of Naples (the one with the volcano) ... for now he pretends not to think about it and continues to play, play, play ....
