Malus - Sexadelic Shooting star

Lorenzo Sorbo

In recent years I have been listening to music almost always in the car. It seems to me that movement accentuates concentration. I like to do it both on long routes and during stops, perhaps in a beautiful place.

Lately I don't even do it myself anymore, I can't do it anymore. I am always in the company of a person who recommends me some really quality plays. I admit, she knows a lot more than me in terms of new releases and it is thanks to her that today I recommend this record listened to in this post-pandemic period that tastes of regained freedom. A record that immediately brings us back to vintage, exotic and psychedelic sounds.

We are not talking about a band from California, but about five guys from Bassano del Grappa: Malus. "Sexadelic shooting star”Is their second album released in April and contains eight songs that take us straight back to the sounds of the 70s, but with a lot of taste and sense of the reworking of the musical style of those years.

Malus

You see, I might already sound obnoxious by saying that it's all “already heard” and, in fact, we're not dealing with anything particularly new. But that's not the point. In the sea magnum of indie and mainstream productions it is now difficult to find something truly new and original and then, let's face it, it is difficult to find new paths nowadays (and after all, it always has been, right?)

Malus are great musicians and you can hear them. The task of (good) music should be to evoke emotional states that are difficult to describe in words. In my opinion these guys do it very well, thanks to a really refined production and arrangements. I find melancholy, psychedelia, dreamy atmospheres and many many sexy sounds that come straight to your stomach. And then, a truly “played” record with fantastic guitar licks, simple but effective bass lines and synth mats that melt even the most persistent melancholy. A whispered, velvety song sits on all the instrumentation and sings in English without ever being too present or invasive. To be clear, try listening to songs like "Cloud Carpet" or "Saint Lawrence night”And tell me if you don't have the feeling of rising. The Malus have a really well blended, powerful and sensual sound. "Astronaut"Winks at the sound suggestions of" Subterranean Homesick Alien "by Radiohead, while “Mobius trip” brings back to the sounds of the 70s cops with pretty good prog sprinkles.

Do like me, listen to them in the car at high volume during a journey and the sequence shot of the road that runs in front will have its ideal soundtrack.
