Types of compressor: the diode bridge compressor

Paul Cherubini

A diode is an electronic device consisting of two terminals, cathode and anode, which passes direct current in one direction, but not the other.

So if a positive voltage is applied to the anode the diode behaves like a very high value resistance, passing a negligible current, while if a positive voltage is applied to the cathode the diode will behave like a low value resistance and the passage of current will be limited by the power value of the component before burning out. When the diode is biased to conduct electricity, its resistance varies as the current changes. The advantage of this type is that it can be used in the ground branch of a voltage divider to modulate its attenuation. Then using a diode bridge it is possible to make the system continue to operate when there is a musical signal. The disadvantage the main one, on the other hand, is represented by the high overall loss of earnings, in the order of 40 dB, this forces the need to use a subsequent gain stage to bring the signal back to a line level with consequent worsening of the ratio signal/noise.

Il Snow 33609 is a dual mono compressor that can also be used in stereo mode or on two mono channels with different settings and balanced connections.

Limiter section

Incorporates a limiter section for both channels with the following controls: threshold, release time by means of continuous potentiometers and, attack time adjusted by a switch that sets it on the fast or slow value.

Compressor section

The compressor section, on the other hand, is made up as follows: threshold, whose noise value is set at –73 dBu (exceeded by at least 20 dB by the most modern compressors) e make-up gain made by continuous potentiometers, while recovery e ratio consisting of step potentiometers which act on fixed values. The sidechain input is also dual mono. Finally here i two meters they only display the gain reduction of the processed signal.

Chandler Limited EMI TG1 limiter

Another diode bridge compressor widely used for its musicality is the Chandler Limited EMI TG1 limiter. It is the reproduction of the rare custom limiter compressor that was found in the consoles of the London studios EMI / Abbey Road used in the latest recordings of Beatles and in albums that have become legendary such as The Dark Side of the Moon of the Pink Floyd.

Its fortune is mainly due to the fact that it sonically resembles the Fairchild 670 without having even a tube inside, presenting an equally warm, airy, clear sound and with a notable presence, characteristics that have made it one of the most used machines by sound engineers all over the world.
