Bass Station II is Novation's new analog monophonic synth, based on the original Bass Station, a synthesizer that quickly became a classic that was introduced about 20 years ago and featured much of 90's music.
The second version of the Bass Station takes advantage of the technologies developed in recent years and has been completely redesigned for the twenty-first century. Bass Station II ha two filters, two oscillators with a third sub-oscillator additional, the ability to save patches and a fully analog effects section. Add to all this one step sequencers, the arpeggiator, keyboard with full size keys and a powerful modulation section and you will have the complete overview of the characteristics of this synth designed for low frequencies but able to do much more.
The Bass-Station synthesis engine was naturally designed to handle bass lines but is extremely versatile and able to produce effective parts as well lead and arpeggios of great effect. In the powerful new synth of the English house, probably destined to soon become a great classic like its predecessor, all the sound creation potential of the original Bass-Station is present, plus a new design and modulation, effects, filters and much other completely redesigned.
The signal path, including the effects section, is 100% analog. The hardware unit layout has been designed in modules with dedicated potentiometers, selectors, sliders and buttons for all the main parameters. Also, absolutely essential, Bass Station II allows you to save and recall patches. The drive already has 64 preset of great impact, then there are others 64 free slots with also the possibility to save others on computer.
The keyboard features 25 full size velocity sensitive keys with assignable aftertouch. It was created with a special 'synth-action', a special key mechanism with immediate touch response designed to work best with the synthesis engine. Bass Station II is also a 'class compliant' device with input and output MIDI I / O can of course also be connected to the computer via USB.
The Synthesis Engine - Overview
Oscillators: Bass Station II is based on three analog oscillators and one noise generator. There are two independent oscillators plus one sub oscillator, a fundamental component for creating powerful bass lines. Oscillators 1 and 2 have 4 waveforms: sine, sawtooth, square and 'variable pulse width'. The third oscillator, the sub-osc, can be set one or two octaves below Oscillator 1. In this case there are three waveforms: square, sine and 'narrow pulse width', which contributes to give the characteristic 'fat' sound.
filters: There are two filters each with integrated overdrive: 'Acid' and 'Classic'. The 'Classic' filter provides low pass, highpass e bandpass with slope at 12 or 24dB. The 'Acid' filter is based on a diode ladder filter that generates a very distinctive sound that recalls the classic TB 303 sound.
Effects: Bass Station II has two effects (without considering the filter overdrive). The first, analog distortion, allows you to add new frequencies to the sound to go from a mild effect that gives warmth to the sound to more powerful distortion. The second effect, 'Osc Filter Mod'm creates an' FM-style 'sound by using the second oscillator to modulate the filter frequency.
Modulation: There are two envelope generators and two low frequency oscillators (LFOs). The former is a classic ADSR 'amp envelope' while the latter is a 'mod envelope' that can be used to modulate the filter frequency, oscillator pitch and pulse width.
